  1. \u00a0When applying to colleges and for scholarships, it is a good idea to make practice copies of\u00a0\u00a0your applications. Remember, it is better to make a mistake on a\u00a0copy rather than the original.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0When requesting letters of\u00a0recommendation, it is an excellent idea to have a resume ready and readable for those who are recommending you. Teachers and counselors\u00a0\u00a0may know you in class, but they rarely follow you outside of it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Resume formats are covered in Communication Arts IIA classes. Resume\u00a0 formats can also be found on the computers in the Internet Lab and\u00a0\u00a0Mac Lab.

  3. \u00a0Pay attention to deadlines.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Give recommenders plenty of time to write letters of recommendation\u00a0 for you. People who grant you a recommendation, do so on their own\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 time. Don’t be surprised if some recommenders ask you to write your\u00a0own letter of recommendation, and then check it over to see if they\u00a0agree or want to add to it.

  4. Give recommenders a reason\u00a0to want to recommend you. Your behavior in your classes, your work\u00a0\u00a0ethic, and how you present yourself inside and outside of the classroom reflect on how people feel about you. Teachers and\u00a0 counselors take recommendations seriously. They will not recommend\u00a0\u00a0students who present themselves unfavorably. Recommendations reflect\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 them as well, and they do not want to stand behind people they feel\u00a0 are not deserving. They do not want to be responsible for recommending a poor candidate for a college or a scholarship. Some\u00a0people will not recommend students who do not waive their rights to\u00a0\u00a0see what is being written about them. Select only those people with\u00a0whom you are sure will favorably recommend you. Most people will let\u00a0\u00a0you know if they have reservations recommending you.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. \u00a0Provide recommenders with\u00a0the actual part of the application that states recommendations are\u00a0required. This way, they will know exactly what you are applying\u00a0for, and they can tailor the recommendation to fit the need. Also,\u00a0 provide the recommenders with addressed and stamped envelopes. It is\u00a0not their responsibility to pay for the mailing of your letters.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. \u00a0 Remember, it is your\u00a0\u00a0 responsibility to see that you have done the right things in\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 preparing the paper work for college and in applying for\u00a0 scholarships. Teachers and counselors are happy to assist you, but\u00a0ultimately the responsibility is yours. If you are deserving, you\u00a0 will see that you are properly prepared. How do we know this?
